Cesar's Cafe, a labor of love by brothers Cesar and Sergio Orlas, has an inspiring story. Starting as a humble coffee van outside the Florey IGA, it has now found its cozy home in a building opposite, welcoming patrons with open arms.
Sergio, with a charming smile, shares his journey. He arrived in Australia to take the reins from his brother, speaking not a word of English. "I had six months to learn the business and speak English fluently!" he exclaims. And learn he did, with a hands-on approach that transformed a real estate office into a vibrant cafe.
"We built it all ourselves!" Sergio proudly declares. From plumbing to design, the brothers' DIY spirit shines through.
A Family Legacy of Hospitality
But Cesar's Cafe is more than just a business; it's a family affair. Sergio's early years were spent helping his mother, who ran a sole-trader business selling Colombian empanadas. He recalls, "She worked tirelessly, waking up at 3:40 am and going to bed at 11 pm. I wanted to help her, and that's how we learned about business."
As I step into Cesar's, the warm atmosphere is palpable. Patrons and staff greet each other like old friends, creating a sense of community. The vibrant Colombian music adds an extra layer of sunshine to the already bright space.
A Culinary Journey: From Empanadas to Coffee
The treat cabinet is a temptation I can't resist. Colombian cheese bread, gluten-free and oozing with cheese, is a must-try. Alfajores, buttery shortbread biscuits with a dulce de leche filling, bring back fond memories of family gatherings.
The empanada selection is extensive, ranging from cheeseburger to spicy pork chorizo, and even vegetarian options. I opt for chicken and jalapeño, and spinach and cheese, though the guava and cheese is calling my name (next time, perhaps!).
The pastry is a standout - flaky on the outside, tender within, and so flavorful it could stand alone.
